November 5th is known as the "Tsunami Disaster Prevention Day" in Japan. It was established by the law enacted in June 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake. In December 2015, the UN General Assembly also designated November 5th as the “World Tsunami Awareness Day”. On March 11th, 2011, Japan was hit by a magnitude 9 earthquake and a huge tsunami.

In Fukushima Prefecture, nuclear power plants lost power and a hydrogen explosion caused severe radioactive contamination. Although many efforts and reconstruction budgets have been invested during the past 10 years after the disaster, it has been very difficult to realize Nature-based Solutions in the midst of the shock of disasters. However, looking back on the past 10 years, we can still see the importance of balancing both disaster prevention and nature conservation.

In Shinchi Town, Fukushima Prefecture, we were fortunate to be able to restore the population and speed up the recovery processes after the multiple disasters. To express our gratitude for the support we received from all over the world 10 years ago, we have released a platform where people living in disaster-prone areas can learn the lessons from the disaster.
